India grab two gold medals on the opening day of the track and field competitions at Asian Games 2010, Guangzhou on Sunday. India’s yellow medal dreams at Asian Games athletics are realized with Preeja Sreedharan and Sudha Singh capturing gold medals in 10,000m and 3000m items. Shooter Ranjan Sodhi won a gold medal in men’s double trap shooting on India’s best day in the games.
After desperate show of Indian athletes in the Asian Games so far, athletics kicked off at the Aoti Athletics Stadium gifting something energetic for Indians. With Sunday’s medals, India raised its medal gain to total 33 medals including 5 gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze medals. India is now placed at eighth spot in the medal tally in the Asian Games.
Preeja led an Indian one-two in the 10,000m item to gold on Sunday. She could clock her personal best of 31.50.28 seconds while grabbing the gold. She showed startling bits of energy in the final moments of the race to ensure that she won the gold.
Sudha, on the other hand, took gold in women’s 3000m Steeplechase finishing the race with her personal best of 9.55.67 seconds. Sudha rushed out of a tight challenge raised by local girl Jin Yuan’s in the run to the gold.
Preeja later said that her disappointment for having finished seventh at the Commonwealth Games boosted her to post gold-wining performance in the Asian Games. “My seventh place finish at the Commonwealth Games was there at the back of my mind throughout the race. I was telling myself, I will not finish at the back of the pack here. I will finish at the top,” said Preeja.
