The Supreme Court will announce its judgment on the constitutionality of the 18th Amendment on Thursday. The Supreme Court will announce its verdict on 18th Amendment case on October 21.
According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, a 17-member larger bench of the SC led by CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing 18th Amendment cases. The hearing of the cases was started on May 24, 2010 and remained continued more than 4 months. The SC reserved the decision after concluding the hearing on September 30 which would be announced on October 21.Around 16 petitions, including those by the Supreme Court Bar Association, J Salik, Ejazul Haq, civil society groups and Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, had been filed against certain provisions of the amendment. They had challenged the formation of a judicial commission and a parliamentary committee for the appointment of judges in superior courts under Article 175-A. The court had started hearing on the petitions on May 24, which had continued with brief intervals for more than four months.
